It's hard to describe how it feels to know that your neighbors - the people you fought for - hate you and everything you stand for. It makes you sad for them, and it makes you want to retaliate against them at the same time.

As a career Army bomb technician, I have seen real heroism in the Ranger warfighters I stalked Afghanistan with each night and in the injured combatants whom I healed alongside in Walter Reed Army Medical Center after losing the two legs God gave me.

In September of 2010, I woke up in Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. I looked down at the end of the bed where my feet should have been, and they weren't there.

No doubt I've stumbled as many times in my goal to be a role model to my kids as I did throughout my early days of learning to walk with prosthetic legs.
